TWI Spanish Program
Overview
Our elementary Two-Way Spanish Immersion program consists of two classes at each grade level. Each class is comprised of fifty percent native speakers of both English and Spanish. Language allocation begins at 90% Spanish and 10% English in kindergarten and shifts by 10% each year (see table below). Students learn to read in Spanish in kindergarten and first grade and then use those skills to quickly learn to read in English by the end of second grade.
Our program is hugely popular with an extensive wait list annually so we always suggest learning all you can about the program, taking an in person tour, and then applying between March 1 and mid May each year so we can include your child in the lottery process!

How do TWI students perform academically?
Your question about how TWI students perform is a good one. The simple answer is our students have an average score at or above grade level in both languages by the end of fifth grade. Here’s the most recent comparative data:
In 5th grade, TWI students outscored their English only counterparts in Math by 13 percentile points. (average 37th percentile vs 23rd)
In 5th grade, TWI students outscored their English only counterparts in English Language Arts by 25 percentile points. (average 66th percentile vs 41st percentile)

What if my child struggles? Are there supports?
Your question about students who fall behind is a good one. We have many supports in place for our students – in addition to the highly trained level of our classroom teachers, we have a Title program with extra aides who push into classes and provide academic support during the day in areas of need for students. We have a Student Study Team process that can identify non-academic issues and provide appropriate supports (socio-emotional groups, etc.) and we have a bilingual Speech Language Pathologist who supports students with language and processing challenges.
If my child has a sibling in the TWI program, do I still need to apply?
What research supports dual immersion or two-way immersion?
Regarding your question, which is a GREAT one, here (https://www.actfl.org/assessment-research-and-development/what-the-research-shows) is the most comprehensive compilation of studies done by one of the most reputable organizations out there called the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages which references cognitive benefits, academic achievement and effect on attitude and beliefs.
We don't live near Jewett. Can I still apply?
Of course! We accept students from all over District 6 AND the Rogue Valley. To find out what school and/or which district your student is a resident of, please use THIS school locator. If your address is located OUTSIDE of the Central Point School District, you must contact the District Office of the school district in which you reside to begin the Out of District transfer process. If your address is located INSIDE of the Central Point School District but Jewett is not your home school, you must fill out an In District transfer application here.
